DHL South Africa announces BEE deal

11 October 2006

DHL Express has concluded an empowerment transaction with the RBH Consortium, which sees the consortium acquiring a 25.01% stake in DHL Express South Africa effective 01 March 2006.

Having joined the global DHL Express family in 1978 with 3 staff members, today DHL South Africa boasts an unprecedented presence in the country with Airside facilities in Johannesburg and Cape Town; 12 Service Centres; 13 Agencies; a country office; a regional office and over 800 employees. An infrastructure comprising a fleet of 4 aircraft and over 180 vehicles, allows DHL to offer fast, reliable solutions for all customers’ distribution needs.

DHL South Africa has extensive experience and knowledge regarding the varying economic and environmental conditions as well as the short and long-term needs of their many customers in the country. In addition to its long association with the region, DHL has been able to build up seamless networks across South Africa, resulting in the company holding an estimated 44% market share in the local International Express industry (nearly 5 times its nearest competitors).

Continued support of both social and economic development through sports and community-based initiatives, has allowed DHL to attain a leadership role in driving the socio-economic development of the country. Examples of this include;

  • The 7th Annual All Africa Games held in Johannesburg in 1999;
  • The Jimmy Carter Work Project
  • Handling the movements of all ballots and other election materials for South Africa’s first democratic election held in 1994 on behalf of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC)

Tom Plummer, Managing Director of DHL South Africa, in response to the conclusion of the agreement said: “DHL South Africa is proud to have concluded this Empowerment deal because of it’s relevance to the principles and goals of South Africa’s Black Economic Empowerment Programme and being part of creating opportunities for economic growth.”

The Director of Strategic Investments at RBH – Mr Andrew Jackson commented: “With RBH’s areas of targeted investments including a portfolio of listed and unlisted non-mining assets, the acquisition of a stake in DHL South Africa not only provides RBH an association with a global leader, but enhances the strategy of further diversifying the organisation’s asset base and income stream.”
