Steve Kearney Trust

The Steve Kearney Education Trust has been established in honour of the first chairman of Royal Bafokeng Resources, Steve Kearney, who died tragically in April 2004. He had been appointed to this position to establish a mining company by Kgosi Leruo Molotlegi of the RBN. Steve Kearney’s association with the RBN went back many years during his years at Impala Platinum.

Who may apply

The Trust offers bursaries (PDF - 268KB) to students who are in their first or second year of study at either the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) or the University of Pretoria (Tukkies) in the areas of mining engineering, metallurgy, chemical engineering, geology or rock engineering.

Current employees of RBH operations who are interested in a career in mining engineering, metallurgy, chemical engineering, geology or rock engineering can also apply

How to apply

Complete the application form and together with a curriculum vitae and detailed academic record, post to the address given below. Once your application has been received and considered, you will be requested to submit an essay on a topic to be set by the Trustees.

Closing date for the bursary applications for 2008: 1 March 2008.

What the bursary offers

Bursaries offered by the Steve Kearney Education Trust cover the following:

  • Registration, tuition and examination fees
  • University residence and fees for daily meals
  • Text books and other tutorial materials
  • A reasonable living allowance as determined by the trustees

Once awarded, the continuation of the bursary is a function of the successful and satisfactory completion of the previous year’s study. Bursars will be expected to undertake vacation work at the company at the end of each year, and in addition, will be required to spend one year in the service of the RBH (or at an entity nominated by the RBH) for every year for which they have received a bursary.

Selection process and timing

The trustees review all applications received and compile a shortlist of candidates to be interviewed. Once all candidates on the shortlist have been interviewed, the trustees will make a final selection.
