The investment vehicle of the Royal Bafokeng Nation (RBN), Royal Bafokeng Holdings, has bought a 51% stake in Premier Soccer League club HP Silver Stars, which would be renamed Platinum Stars, to reflect the historic association of both the North West province and the RBN with platinum mining in South Africa.
The transaction, announced on Thursday, overtakes a five-year sponsorship agreement between the RBN and Silver Stars announced last January, when the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace at Phokeng, in the North West Province, became Silver Stars’ home ground.
Royal Bafokeng Sports Holdings MD George Khunou said that the group was pleased to have acquired a stake in the club.
“We envisage it becoming an important role-player in meeting the recreational objectives of the RBN’s ambitious masterplan for socio-economic development and, more specifically, a primary vehicle in fulfilling RBSH’s vision for a vibrant, healthy and patriotic community, transformed through sport.”
