Being at the heart of Rustenburg host city’s activities of the 2010 FIFA World host city, the Royal Bafokeng Nation who are the owners of the Royal Bafokeng Stadium and the recently launched 68 room Sports Academy in Phokeng which will be a base camp for the English team, also developed a Home stay programme to increase the bed capacity of accommodation establishments for the World Cup.
The North West Parks and Tourism Board together with the National Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism also conducted a tourism products research study/audit in preparation for the world cup, to double check the state of readiness from a tourism country (South Africa) point of view. The research focused on accommodation facilities, beds availability, tourism attractions, tourism information centres, tour operators/ tour packaging audit, transportation/transfer audit (airlines, luxury coach buses, trains, tour guides etc), language barriers etc. The results of both studies indicated that within Rustenburg as a host city had a shortage of 5800 beds. Hence the Home stay programme initiative.
In order to address the huge backlog of bed availability for the World Cup, Royal Bafokeng Bafokeng Enterprise Development (RBED) initiated the ‘Home-stay Programme’ that includes homes from all five Bafokeng Regions and greater Rustenburg. This programme is endorsed by the North West Parks and Tourism Board. RBED being the organisation leading this programme then signed and MOU with NWPTB for joint Marketing and Training efforts to implement the Home stay programme.
The concept of a home stay programme is derived from the inherent African culture of hospitality and sharing and will be expressed by offering accommodation using already existing household (homeowners) to host football fans and tourists. This concept can be seen in practice in other geographical areas of the North West Province, Bojanala, Dr Kenneth Kaunda, Dr Ruth Mompati and Dr Modiri Molema district Municipalities.
RBED aims to continue with this programme beyond 2010 hopefully with the support of the National and Provincial government’s Tourism departments to ensure that local communities benefit from tourism through a sustainable development programme.
Currently there are 459 beds which met the required criteria set by accredited assessors from the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa (TGCSA) in ensuring quality assurance in the home-stays. Training was also conducted in hospitality skills programme including SA Host, Customer care, Health and Safety, House Keeping and Professional conduct etc. All home stays are categorized in relation to geographical locations (regions within Bafokeng and Greater Rustenburg), rates and kilometres away from the stadium.
Security is one of the most important focus points of the qualifying criteria and this includes vetting all Home stay unit owners and checking the availability of all basic risk mitigation measures such as insurances. Arrangements have been made to have all areas under a 24 hour police our own RBN security patrol to make sure that all our fans/tourists are safe in line with the World Cup Security Plan.
